How to Start Flying Scale Model Airplanes

Almost or many RC airplane enthusiast dream of having their favorite full size replica to bore holes in the sky. But it will not be easy just to copy the exact dimension of the full size airplane and then scale it down to what ever you desire, like for example 1/8 scale, ¼ scale so forth and so on. Even though you know how to use CAD software to design and draw the airplane, without considering the aerodynamic principles, you won’t have a stable airplane. So this is the first step on how to fly scale model airplanes. It will be impossible to fly your scale model airplane without considering the aerodynamic design. Again, before you attempt to build & fly your very first scale model, you should have already build your skill to at least an intermediate level. Meaning, flying a non-scale shoulder wing design type of model airplane. Then choose the trainer type full-scale model airplane like the Cessna 150 or J3 Piper Cub.

At least those airplanes have a built-in stability design. The wings constant chord and rectangular (for J3 Piper Cub). High wing location, meaning the wings is above the fuselage, which have pendulum stability. Landing gear is tricycle type (for Cessna 150). But wait, does this mean the stability is the same when you scale down those airplanes? The answer is No. Those airplanes will fly terrible when you scale it down and copy the exact dimensions. Like what I’ve mentioned previously, the aerodynamic design should be considered. This phenomenon is known as ” The Scale Effect”. You can’t scale down the air molecules & the viscosity of air. The behavior will be different. The wing location & wing area, horizontal and vertical stabilizer area & location, airfoil design, plays a major role on its stability.

Redesigning the airplane is essential. The model has to be redesigned based on the lift and drag coefficients and Reynolds number on its miniature dimensions to achieve stability. This is why some Almost Ready to Fly, Ready to Fly or Kits have 30% or 40% scale specification. Meaning only 30% was copied from the full size airplane. Possibly the horizontal stabilizer area was modified or vertical stabilizer. Changed the airfoil type or wing area. In order to achieve stability. The closer its size to the full size airplane, the more you can copy the exact dimension and behavior. This is why ¼ scale model airplanes are popular to those really serious on RC airplane modeling. Considering the cost and set-up, danger to life and property, it will only be possible for those who were well to do. Imagine how many gallons of fuel it will consume! You will also need bigger flying field. Good thing that gas or petroleum engines (chainsaw engines) are fit to use in those monsters which reduces the cost of fuel. Unlike using methanol, castor oil and nitromethane for fuel on glow engines.

So before having any expectations on acquiring one, first consider those facts.

RC Boats For Today’s Beginning Enthuests!

When it comes to the RC world the dearest choice is your dirt rompin’- mud spittin’ monster trucks and your wicked wippin’ high flyin’ aircrafts. But when you want something that will glide your mind gracefully across time like the weather will these things, then RC Boats will entertain you for many hours of outdoor fun and family kicks for all ages.

Introduction to RC Boats

With RC Boats you have two grades or levels that you can choose from to have all your fun. The first grade of RC Boats you are going to run into will be the toy-grade which is more basic and less powerful then your second grade which will be your hobby-grade versions.  They all operate in the same manner of your other RC vehicles by using a hand held controller that will communicate wirelessly with a receiver that is on the boat and it will control the steering as well as the speed. You also have the choice of buying a ready made kit that comes already built for you and ready to run, and if you are like me, then you can get your do-it-yourself kits that you can build on your own.

RC Boat Varieties

There are different types of boats that you may want to check out so that you can find the one that fits your needs and personality. Some people love to build their boats that are built for authenticity and realism so that when you look at the RC boat you would think someone took a shrink ray and zapped it into a miniature size model so they can display it above the fireplace. Scale boats are usually built from kits that are designed by coping famous boats from history or navy ships and can even be designed like the one that you own and can be done in styles like sailboats, powerboats, ocean liners and even battleships. The appearance and performance will always be more important than how tricked out they are or how fast it is.

RC Sailboats

Then there are those that love the wind and enjoy sailing. Your sailboat’s power source, even at this small scale is the wind. Most people that start out in RC boats start out with sailboats. They are great for beginners because you don’t have to worry about motors or engines that need a more technical and skilled person to keep them running and working properly. Don’t get me wrong because sailboats are in a league of their own. There is skill involved with these boats as well and are not necessarily slow. They can be both for sport and racing as well.

Nitro Powered RC Boats

Nitro powered boats use a specially made hobby blend of fuel that is made from nitro / methanol / and lubricating oil designed and made just for nitro marine engines. They are different from your gasoline type of motors. Nitro rc boats are faster than your other rc boats and do not last as long with running time. The nitro fuel will always be more expensive then your gas that powers your rc boats. There are a few things you need to consider when dealing with your nitro rc boats. Speed, noise, and maintenance. You also need to make sure that you have plenty of room to operate this babies because they can reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Unlike your other rc boats you need to know that these engines require you to have tuning skills.

Just to give you an idea, you can not just plug a battery up to this rc boat and play with it. A nitro engine is more advanced because it has a carburetor, fuel filter, air filter, cooling head, and tuned pipe/s. Every one of these parts must work properly for the nitro engine to work properly. Also, before you take one of these babies out and push up some roster tails you need to think about weather conditions and temperature because this will have an effect on operation and engine tuning.

RC Powerboats

And last but not least you have your powerboats. Powered by engines and motors these babies attract the largest portion of hobbyists, especially beginners. These also come in two types, sport and racing boats. Your sport boats are easy to operate and are really fun to spend the day with. Your powerboats are not just for speed and can be used in a pool when that is the only body of water you have close to home. These babies do require more skill do to the fact that you are dealing with more speed.

Excellent Tips For RC Plane Novices

Flying an electric RC airplane is like having beginners luck every time you fly. The first remote control airplane I ever got was electrically powered, I had no flying skills whatsoever, and I still managed to fly it perfectly without even crashing. Why you ask? Because electric RC planes like the one I had are so simple, they only have two control options, power and steering. You go as fast, or slow as you want and just choose your direction.

Now yes, there are electric RC planes that you can buy or build, that have many control channels and all the works, like flaps, ailerons, etc. Those types of electric airplanes are basically made for advanced flyers who don’t like the mess that comes with the use of fuel. Most hobbyist start with an electrically powered plane, then move onto fuel powered ones once they have mastered it. But like I said, some people just don’t like the mess and added expense that comes with a fuel powered engine, so they stick with electric motors. Fine, do whatever makes you happy, but I am just going to talk about getting a good electric RC plane for a beginner pilot.

Now first off you should note that electric airplanes can come in a few different types. Basically there are only park flyers, slow flyers, regular electric planes and advanced electrically powered RC airplanes.

Park flyers are mainly for parks and small areas similar to that outdoors. Slow flyers are just the opposite, since they move slower they are for indoors. These can be great for the winter or when it is just plain to windy outside to fly.

A regular electric RC airplane is the best for beginners and is exactly what I flew as my first RC airplane. Usually these planes are priced around $50 and they have just two controls, so it is ideal for beginners. This type of airplane is usually made of Styrofoam, and very little metal, so you need to be careful when flying it. Even if you do crash and damage something, usually a little duct tape will fix anything on it. I kid you not, I still have my first electric RC plane, which I broke the wing twice on, and it still fly’s!

An advanced electric RC airplane is ideal for advanced pilots who don’t like the mess of fuel, like I said before, but it is also great for areas where noise is a concern and you still want the full experience. Advanced electric R/C airplanes are more full bodied then regular ones, usually made of all plastic and balsa wood, plus they also have around 5 or 6 channels of control.

All in all, buy a park flyer if you just want a quick little flight every once in awhile, get a slow flyer if you want to fly indoors, purchase a regular electric RC plane if you want to get into the RC airplane hobby seriously, but are just a beginner. Last but not least, once you master an electric RC plane, move onto a more advanced nitro methane fuel powered one, or an advanced electrically powered plane.
